Learn to Type Fast: From 34 to 88wpm
Typing takes up a lot of our time, from crafting the perfect tweets to writing a report. We type a lot.
For a very long time, I typed rather slowly. Typing had always been more or less as fast as writing by hand, so I never paid more attention to improving my typing speed.
I decided to teach myself to type even faster.
Step 1: Touch Typing
I was taught touch typing in Grade 2. Basically, our hands should be on the keyboard and the index fingers should be on the “F” and “H” keys. If you never learned touch typing, check keybr out.
Step 2: Typing Tests
I headed to MonkeyType to complete some typing tests to find out how I never improved on typing faster. I started to treat the tests as games and get competitive.
Step 3: Fixing the Flaws
As sometimes our fingers are not as good at typing certain keys, and that hinders how fast or accurate we can get. On MonkeyType, I can practise typing “slow” and “missed” words right after a test.
Step 4: Shortcuts
Taking time to learn the hotkeys of different programmes saves me so much time in the long run. My mouse is great, but it’s even better if I don’t have to lift my palms to search for one item from the menu bar.
